Chapter Seventeen

I should probably be more careful.

The number of people in the world who know I have unexplainable abilities just increased by four… plus, however many people live in that Nepalese village. Though, it’s seriously unlikely any of those villagers will ever end up working the talk show circuit to speak about the strange foreigner with magical abilities. I mostly trust the Boone family won’t sell me out, too. Some stories just aren’t believable to the general public.

Of course, if the detectives working on Milo’s missing person case are any good, it won’t take them too long to develop doubts about any fabricated explanation for his disappearance. At least the family has it going for them that the truth is considered impossible by most people.

Speaking of impossible… seems I have a yeti issue to deal with. I’m half tempted to try to find a real sword before going back there. Got a feeling it’s going to take more than an old hockey stick to deal with this problem.

Suppose I could simply rain fiery death on them from above again… but I’d prefer not to kill this man. At least, not unless I’m forced to. Those fake yetis are one thing—not really alive—but an actual human is a bit different.

In the back of my mind, I can almost hear Fang chuckling at me for being a weird vampire. He thinks it’s strange for a vampire to be squeamish about killing mere mortals—even though he doesn’t go around doing it himself... unless he, too, wants to incur the wrath of vampire hunters. Trust me, none of us do. Anyway, to him, it’s like a vegan being upset over the killing of chickens or cows. I like the guy as a friend, but there’s a reason we’d never work romantically.

So, I’ve got a guy using magic to summon ice apes to deal with. Seems like it shouldn’t be too big a deal. It’s not my normal preference, but a guy willing to destroy a village full of innocent people is not likely to be open to changing his mind from a simple conversation. This is undoubtedly going to take slapping him around a little first. Again, not my MO but, people are dead because of this guy. Getting a little rough with him won’t bother me. It’s sort of like the cop missing on purpose when trying to stuff a child abuser into the car and ‘accidentally’ ramming his head into the window.

I picture myself swooping down out of the air, tackling the guy, swinging him around to put his back against a tree and threatening him into compliance. Oh, who am I kidding? This guy killed villagers on a mad quest for power. He’s probably not going to be intimidated easily, and even if he appears to surrender, he’d be lying.

Okay, Sam. Prepare.

There’s a really good chance this man is going to need to die by my hand. If letting him live means innocent people die, I’ll deal with the guilt. And hey, who knows? Maybe the nymph will have more information.
